On May 27, 2014 the cat started having seizures, was lethargic and anorexic. A short time later the owner bathed the cat with liquid dish washing detergent twice. On May 28, 2014 the cat died. On May 29, 2014 the owner contacted the Animal Product Safety Service (APSS) to obtain help. The APSS veterinarian stated adverse signs can be seen with therapeutic doses of etofenprox; hypersalivation, agitation, and lethargy are most commonly seen. The APSS veterinarian finally stated death is not expected. The APSS veterinarian recommended a necropsy, which was rejected. The owner stated there are dogs in the household, but they don't receive flea treatments and the yard and house had not been treated.

The APSS veterinarian stated that the substance was considered to have a doubtful likelihood of causing the clinical situation. On June 4, 2014 an APSS technician called the owner to follow-up. The owner owner stated that the cat is doing better, the seizures, lethargy, and anorexia ended on June 1, 2014 and the owner was supplementing with kitten milk replacer. On June 5, 2014 the owner called the APSS as the cat had a seizure on June 4, 2014 and died shortly after. Later that day, an APSS technician contacted the owner to discuss necropsy or hair testing, the owner declined both.
