On May 28, 2013 the owner noticed that the puppy was symptomatic. On May 30, 2013 the owner bathed the puppy with liquid dish washing detergent (LDWD). Later that afternoon the owner contacted the Animal Product Safety Service (APSS) to obtain help. The APSS veterinarian stated that if used per label, there should be a low risk for clinical signs; however, the owner applied the product to the puppy that was under 12 weeks of age, which is an off-label use of the product. The APSS veterinarian recommended that the owner take the puppy to the veterinarian and have the veterinarian call for information.

The APSS veterinarian stated that the substance was not considered to be related to causing the clinical situation. On June 3, 2013 an APSS assistant contacted the owner to update the case. The owner stated that the puppy died on June 1, 2013. A necropsy was not available.

On May 27, 2013 the owner applied the product to her litter of puppies; there may have been 1 to 5 puppies in the group (the owner did not specify). On May 30, 2013 the owner contacted the Animal Product Safety Service (APSS) to obtain help. The APSS veterinarian also stated that despite the use of the product on puppies of inappropriate age, nothing more than drooling from the taste would be expected, or possibly depression if the puppies were really soaked and the alcohol in the product absorbed across their skin.
