In 2012, the following treatments were applied to the hives: amitraz. Treated for mites 3x last year. In 2013, the following treatments were applied to the hives: formic acid, amitraz. Information on crops located near the beeyards: corn was adjacent from the beeyard. Other crops in the area included bush. Yard is a holding yard for all BK hives where they are inspected by the prov. prior to moving them. Hives were located in grassy area just before thick treeline. Hives were inspected 3 days prior to the incident by prov. inspector and were very strong. Dead bees noticed when BK was preparing them to be transported out of prov. Lots of tall grass around all the hives. Prior to this incident one of the fields now planted with corn had not yet been cultivated and was very weedy with dandelions. Farmer planted corn on Wed nearly a foot from the hives. Went back Thurs and there were dead bees (couple of cups in front of each hive). Yard in question is now gone, all are at his home shipping yard.

There were a total of 33 colonies in the bee yard. There were 8 affected colonies. There were 501-1000 dead bees per colony observed outside hive. Bees were actively foraging at the time of the incident and dead bees had pollen on their legs. Inspector given some dead bees with pollen on their legs when the bee health inspection was conducted for pollination. Adult bee symptoms included Shaking/trembling/twitching, crawling, disoriented. Additionally, bees just hanging out at the hive entrance. Brood symptoms included spotty brood pattern. Additionally, the main brood symptom refers to not enough bees on the brood. Queen symptoms included emergency/supersedure queen cells, queen stopped laying, unusual laying pattern and failure of colony to re-queen itself.Sample of dead bees taken from affected hive, had positive detects for carbendazim. Sample of dead bees taken from affected hive, composite sample of dead bees, had positive detects for clothianidin. The weather at the time of the incident was sunny and dry. Prior to the incident, there were an average of 18 frames of bees, 8 - 9 frames of brood, and 4 frames each of pollen and honey. The following pests were present in the affected bee yard in the past year; chalkbrood, varroa mite and other noted as apiaries. The previously noted disease(s) or pest(s) did not get worse after the incident.After the incident, there were an average of 9 frames of bees, 8-9 frames of brood, stays the same but fewer bees that are more scattered and spread out, and 4 frames each of pollen and honey. Additional food sources provided to the bees included sugar syrup.
