1-29452732-The reporter, a manager of an estate, indicates an animal may have been exposed to an herbicide containing the active ingredient carfentrazone-ethyl. The reporter indicates three days prior to his initial report the product was diluted 16 ml to 4 gallons of water and applied near the edge of a 7000 gallon Koi pond. The caller acknowledged the product was used contrary to the label recommendations. He indicated the night after application there was a heavy rain and may have been significant run off from the application area into the fish pond. The reporter indicated 16 koi fish had been dead the morning after the rain. The reporter indicated the pond was then drained to a 3 inch level, refilled, and additives meant to boost the immune system of the fish placed in the pond. He reported he had taken water samples for evaluation but was concerned about the remaining fish in the pond. He was unable to provide a discreet number of animals that may have been exposed. He asked about ecological fate. The caller was advised of environmental degradation and ecotoxicologic data available. He was also advised factors involved in fish kills can include a low level of dissolved oxygen, pollutants, disease, temperature extremes, excessive vegetation, predation, and turnover (mixing of water layers). No follow up was obtained. No further information is available.
