On April 8, 2012 the owner noticed that the dog was symptomatic. Later that day, the owner tried to bathe the dog three times with shampoo. On April 9, 2012 the owner took the dog to the veterinarian, where he was given prednisone. Later that day, the owner noticed that the dog's behavior was back to normal. On April 10, 2012 the owner gave the dog Chlor-Tripolon; that day, the owner noticed that the dog was no longer pruritic or panting. On April 11, 2012 the owner took the dog back to the veterinarian, where more prednisone was administered. On April 12, 2012 the owner observed that the dog was no longer agitated, and had made a full recovery. On May 22, 2012 the owner contacted the Animal Product Safety Service (APSS) to obtain help. The APSS veterinarian stated that dermal exposure to permethrin and methoprene products can cause dermal hypersensitivity reactions and that these reactions may be from the carriers rather than the active ingredients. The APSS veterinarian also stated that pyrethrins applied dermally could cause paresthesia or a tingling sensation due to a direct effect on sensory nerve endings, and that this could occur at therapeutic doses.
