Treatment / Traitement
(p.ex. description des symptômes tels que la fréquence et la gravité
On September 8, 2012 the owner noticed that the cat was coughing. On September 10, 2012 the owner noticed that the cat was no longer coughing. Later that afternoon, the owner came home and found the cat recumbent under a bush outside. The owner also observed that the cat was weak, and when she set the cat down, his rear legs splayed apart. The owner took the cat to the veterinarian, where symptomatic and supportive care was provided. The owner stated that her vet said that the cat had an immune mediated disorder, with the cat's white blood cells (WBCs) were attacking the red blood cells (RBCs) or something like that. Later that evening, the cat died. On September 25, 2012 the owner contacted the Animal Product Safety Service (APSS) to obtain help. The APSS veterinarian stated that the product contains S-methoprene, an insect growth regulator, and Etofenprox, a pyrethroid-like insecticed. The APSS veterinarian also stated that if an oral exposure occurred, gastrointestinal (GI) upset including vomiting and hypersalivation could be seen, and signs would generally be seen within 2 hours of the oral exposure. The APSS veterinarian said that the patient could also develop paresthesia around the mouth and at the application site and that there would be a very low risk of central nervous system (CNS) signs including trembling, ear flicking, hyperesthesia, and rarely tremors. The APSS veterinarian stated that clinical signs would be expected within 48 to 72 hours. The APSS veterinarian recommended that the owner have her veterinarian call for information and call back with questions.
Mort
The APSS veterinarian stated that the substance was not considered to be related to causing the clinical situation and that cardiomyopathy was considered to have a medium likelihood of causing the clinical situation. A necropsy was not available.
