On June 10, 2012 the owner noticed that the dog was symptomatic. On June 11, 2012 the owner noticed that the dog was also weak; a couple of hours later the owner bathed the dog with liquid dish washing detergent (LDWD). Later that evening, the owner contacted the Animal Product Safety Service (APSS) to obtain help. The APSS veterinarian stated that the intensity of signs was uncharacteristic for labeled use of the product, and thus the labeled use of the product would not be expected to be related to the intensity of the signs the owner observed. The APSS veterinarian also stated that a typical adverse reaction related to dermal hypersensitivity or to drooling and vomiting if the product were accidentally ingested. The APSS veterinarian recommended that the owner give supportive care by giving liquid soup support that evening, take the dog to the veterinarian as soon as possible, and call back with questions. The owner stated he was unable to get to the veterinarian until the following morning.

The APSS veterinarian stated that the substance was considered to have a doubtful likelihood of causing the clinical situation. On June 12, 2012 the owner called the APSS to update the case. The owner stated that the dog died on the morning of June 12, 2012, before he could take the dog to the veterinarian. The APSS veterinarian stated that gastric dilitation and volvulus was considered to have a medium likelihood of causing the clinical situation. The owner did not wish to pursue a necropsy.
