1-30580810- The reporter, a pet owner, indicated her animals were exposed to an insecticidal product containing the active ingredient phenothrin. The pet owner indicated one week ago she applied the product to her seventy five pound ten year female dog (Subform III, #1) and finding she had run out of the correct product for her six year female four pound Chihuahua (Subform III, #2) dog she applied four drops of the larger dogs product to the smaller animals back. The reporter indicated within a couple hours of application the larger was lethargic; it was bathed and fully resolved. The reporter indicated the smaller dog developed ataxia and pruritis with sixty minutes of application. The pet owner bathed the animal and took it to the veterinarian when it did not improve. The animal was hospitalized overnight on intravenous fluids. The pet owner was called by the veterinarian in the morning and advised the animal had died in the night. The pet owner was advised it was imperative to follow label directions for all products used on her animals. Dosage can be very important when caring for animals of very small stature. No further information is available.
