1-30385092- The reporter, a veterinary technician, indicated a dog was exposed to an insecticidal flea and tick drop containing the active ingredient permethrin. The reporter indicates that the 8 year-old, 30 pound mixed breed dog had the product applied one day prior to her initial contact. She reported that some of the product may have dripped down the dogs leg and it is possible that he may have licked some of the product. The reporter indicated that the dog seemed uncomfortable, and had some dermal irritation. The reporter was informed that the skin reaction was not expected. Bathing with a non-insecticidal shampoo was recommended and the reporter was advised to give symptomatic and supportive care for the dermal irritation. On follow-up a staff member at the veterinary clinic indicated that at the time of initial contact the dog had been bathed and was put on antibiotics and a pain medication. The veterinary clinic spoke with the owner 3 days after the dogs visit to the clinic and the skin had scabbed over and the dog was still on pain medications. No further information is available.
