On April 19, 2012 the owner noticed that the donkey had extremity edema, consisting of areas of purple-looking tissue. That morning, the owner consulted with her regular veterinarian, who provided symptomatic care as needed on the owner's property. On April 20, 2012 the owner observed that serum was oozing from the pre-existing laceration on the donkey's leg and that the skin was discolored. A few moments after observing those signs, the owner contacted the Animal Product Safety Service (APSS) to obtain help. The APSS veterinarian stated that dermal reactions to the product are possible and that they are self-limiting. The APSS veterinarian referred the owner to the product manufacturer to discuss reimbursement, if necessary. The APSS veterinarian also recommended that the owner call back with questions and have the veterinarian call for information.

The APSS veterinarian stated that the substance was considered to have an unknown likelihood of causing the clinical situation. On April 26, 2012 an APSS technician called the owner to update the case. The owner stated that on April 23, 2012 the donkey's extremity edema was milder and that she had called her regular veterinarian that day. The owner said that on April 24, 2012, the donkey had mostly recovered, and the only remaining symptom was mild edema. However, the owner observed that later that evening the donkey died. A necropsy was not available.
