1-23814805- The reporter, a veterinary technician, indicates a patient was exposed to an insecticide containing the active ingredient permethrin. The caller stated the animal, a nine year female eight pound domestic shorthair cat, presented to them just prior to the initial contact with the registrant with the primary complaint of seizures and muscle tremors. The owner had applied the product, a topical flea and tick drop labeled only for use on dogs, one day prior to presentation. The caller indicated the animal had been washed but the signs persisted. The caller was advised the use of concentrated canine pyrethrin/pyrethroid spot-on type products can result in significant problems if inappropriately used on cats. The caller was advised of signs seen after such exposures, standard treatment protocols, and prognosis. On routine call back the veterinary technician informed the registrant the animal had persistent intermittent seizures until 3am the morning following initial contact with the registrant. The animal had been administered thiopental to alleviate the seizures and as a consequence became hypothermic. Active warming had stabilized the temperature. On a second routine call back the veterinary technician informed the registrant the animal had been discharged asymptomatic two days following the initial contact with the registrant. No further information is available.
