Owner stated that Sadie developed diarrhea with blood clots and vomiting recently today. On further exploring her environment, client found a bagged container of Greenleaf Moss Control, several small puncture marks noted in the bag, client notes dusting of the contents on the garage floor (approx equivalent to a half-loaf of bread). The owner was advised that this product contains ferrous sulfate at 11% concentration. Iron toxicosis in dogs begins with early vomiting, progressing to diarrhea; mucosal hemorrhage is indicative of potential for iron to be absorbed systemically, which can result in hypovolemic shock within 12 hrs of ingesting a significant amount of iron. Hepatic injury may also be of risk concern in cases experiencing shock. Later on that morning the case was discussed with the ER vet treating the animal. Tests results on serum iron came back low, the risk for systemic iron toxicosis is likely low; discussed option of repeating serum iron in another 4 or 5 hours, and if still wnl, should greatly decrease any risk for systemic iron toxicosis. Desferal is on hand now if needed; patient is stable. Per clinic update, the pet fully recovered. Was hospitalizwed for 3 days, but only showed clinical signs for ~24 hours.
