1-23103348- The reporter called to indicate his animals had been exposed to a pesticide containing the active ingredient S-Methoprene. The reporter states he applied the product, a topical antiparasitic, to two of his animals 06/15/10. This was four days prior to his initial contact with the registrant. The first animal, a one year male domestic long hair cat, remained asymptomatic. The second, a five month female domestic shorthair cat (sub-form III, #1), had initially demonstrated lethargy within 24 hours of application. The pet owner then indicated his animal¿s appetite waned slowly until she refused food altogether one day prior to the initial contact with the registrant. The pet owner reported he had bathed the animal twice prior to the call, but had not used any shampoo to clean it. The caller remarked the animal was nonresponsive while being bathed, which was reported to be atypical behavior for the cat. The caller was told the active ingredient has a low order of toxicity in mammals. The symptoms seen in the ill animal would not be expected after dermal application of the product. He was advised to bathe the animal in a non-insecticidal shampoo and seek prompt veterinary care. The caller was further advised the animal likely was suffering from some other unrelated illness. The pet owner spontaneously called back to inform the registrant the animal had died. He had not seen a veterinarian and the animal was buried before a necropsy could be suggested. No further information is available.
