1-22103535: A reporter (calf owner) called on 03/31/2010 to report the possible exposure of his calves to an herbicide containing the active ingredient Diquat Dibromide. According to the reporter, the product was applied by his neighbor to his neighbor's pond in 01/2010 along with an unknown non-company product ("Reemely" as spelled by reporter). Following rainfall, the overflow from the neighbor's pond drains into the reporter's pond, which is his cattle's water source. The reporter suspects that his cattle had ingested contaminated water following rainfall. The reporter stated that a total of 4 calves, each just a few days old, died recently. Three died one month prior to the report, one calf died the morning of the report. The reporter suspected that the calves were exposed by suckling from cows that had ingested contaminated water. The calves that died one month prior to the report were disposed of. A necropsy was planned on the calf that died on the morning of the report. The reporter was advised that the exposure described is not expected to result in adverse effects or the deaths reported. A recommendation was made to consult the product label with respect to proper product use. No further information was obtained.
Mort
If applied directly to open bodies of water, Diquat binds to suspended particles in the water and disappears rapidly. Its half-life in water is less than 48 hours. Given the time between alleged exposure and the death of the calves and the half-life of Diquat in water, it is extremely unlikely that Diquat caused the death of these calves. The Reward Herbicide label allows animals to consume water from a pond in which Reward was applied 24 hours after treatment.
