1-21832717: A reporter (cat owner) called on 03/04/2010 to report the possible exposure of his cat to a canine topical flea and tick product containing the active ingredient Permethrin. According to the reporter, the product was applied to the dog on 03/02/2010. He suspects that the cat may have licked product off the dog because on 03/03/2010, the cat developed muscle tremors, had difficulty walking, and was not eating or drinking. The cat's signs were persistent at the time of the report. The reporter was advised that cats having exposure to concentrated canine pyrethrin products may develop serious symptoms within 30 minutes to 24 hours of exposure. The signs of overdose were discussed. A recommendation was made to seek immediate veterinary attention for symptomatic and supportive care including management of tremors with methocarbamol, treatment of seizures with phenobarbital, maintenance of hydration, and regulation of body temperature. It was recommended that the cat be monitored by a veterinarian for a minimum of 48-72 hours as signs may re-develop in under-treated patients. On follow up on 03/05/2010, the reporter stated that the cat was not brought to the veterinarian and had recovered by the morning of the follow up. NOTE: The product label states that cats that actively groom or engage in close physical contact with treated dogs may be at risk of harm.
