1-21554812: A reporter (veterinarian) called on 02/01/2010 to report the exposure of a cat to a canine flea and tick product containing the active ingredient Permethrin. According to the reporter, the product was applied to the cat earlier in the day on 02/01/2010. Within 3 hours, the cat developed tremors, ataxia, salivation, and dilated pupils. The cat's owner bathed the cat with a mild dish soap at home and brought it to the reporter for evaluation. Upon presentation, the caller noted the previously described signs in addition to tachycardia. The cat was treated with diazepam, methocarbamol, and IV fluids and was doing better at the time of the report. The reporter was advised that the treatment instituted is appropriate for the symptomatic and supportive care recommended with accidental feline exposures to canine concentrated pyrethrin products. A recommendation was made to consider another bath to ensure full decontamination. On follow up on 02/03/2010, a veterinary clinic employee stated that the cat was receiving IV fluids and methocarbamol. At the time of the follow up, the cat was eating and her tremors were improved. A recommendation was made to monitor the cat for a minimum of 48-72 hours as clinical signs may re-develop in under treated cats. On follow up on 02/05/2010, the initial reporter stated that the cat was discharged with oral methocarbamol on 02/04/2010 after its signs had resolved. No further information was obtained. NOTE: This product is not labeled for use on cats.
