1-22094480: A reporter (an employee with the (state) Department of Agriculture) called on 03/30/2010 to report the exposure of several cows to a pesticide containing the active ingredient Carbofuran. According to the reporter, the product was mixed with corn grain in an attempt to eradicate starlings in 01/2010. Seven cows ingested an unknown amount of product at an unspecified time and died. Specific signs were not mentioned. There were several cows that survived, but actual product exposure is unknown and any signs that were seen were not mentioned. The reporter inquired about the extent of product residue in meat and milk, the metabolism of the product in cattle, and whether the milk and meat from the surviving cattle may be safely consumed by humans. The reporter's questions were forwarded to the appropriate party and the following response was provided based on a goat study: Given the clearance time of Carbofuran, any exposed animal surviving past 12-24 hours will likely be clear of Carbofuran metabolites. There will be no potential Carbofuran residues in the milk or the meat after 60 days. The product is metabolized in cows as it is in goats, with 85% excreted as metabolites in the urine, 6% excreted in the feces, and 0.3% in the milk. All meats are below 0.01% of the dose, and the liver and kidney are 0.03% of the dose. The milk and meat from the surviving cows may be safely consumed by humans. NOTE: This product is not labeled to be used for baiting.
