1-20944061: A reporter (cat owner) called on 12/07/2009 to report the exposure of her 2 cats to a flea egg and larvae product containing the active ingredient Methoprene. According to the reporter, the product was applied to the cats on 12/04/2009. Within 1 hour, both cats had developed seizures. The reporter called the veterinarian who recommended bathing the cats. The cats were bathed with hand dish soap, but the seizures persisted and they were brought to the veterinarian. The cats were re-bathed and treated with Valium, methocarbamol, phenobarbital, and propofol. The seizures persisted. The reporter took her cats to a different veterinarian as a result of financial constraints. Cat #1 (1st Subform III) died on 12/05/2009. Cat #2 (2nd Subform III) died on 12/06/2009. The reporter was advised that the active ingredient has little to no mammalian toxicity, so adverse effects are not expected. The product does not contain Permethrin or a pyrethroid as the reporter had been advised by her veterinarian. A recommendation was made to consider necropsy to determine the cause of death. No further information was obtained.
