1-19971348: A reporter (cat owner) called on 09/16/2009 to report the exposure of 2 cats to a canine flea and tick product containing the active ingredient Permethrin. According to the reporter, the product was applied to the cats on 09/12/2009. On 09/13/2009, Cat #1 (1st Subfom III) developed twitching that progressed to seizures later that evening. The reporter bathed both cats and brought Cat #1 to the veterinary clinic on 09/13/2009. Cat #1 had a temperature of 108 degrees F on presentation at the veterinary clinic. The cat was treated with IV fluids, unknown "relaxer" medications, and was bathed in cold water to decrease the body temperature. Cat #1 remained hospitalized and his temperature did decrease, but he died on 09/16/2009 at the veterinary clinic. The other cat never developed any signs. The reporter was advised that the product is not intended for use on cats. Inappropriate use on cats can result in serious signs of toxicity including tremors, seizures, hyperthermia and death. Because signs can re-develop for up to 72 hours in under-treated cats, 48-72 hours of monitoring at a veterinary clinic is recommended. The reporter was advised to monitor the other cat for the development of any signs, and to discuss with her veterinarian the use of appropriate flea and tick products for the asymptomatic elderly cat. NOTE: This product is not labeled for use on cats.
