1-19692387: A reporter called on 08/30/2009 to report the exposure of a kitten to a flea and tick spray containing the active ingredients Methoprene and Permethrin. According to the reporter, her brother accidentally bought the incorrect product and sprayed the cat 5 minutes prior to the report. The reporter and her brother were unable to bathe the kitten because it started biting and scratching. The kitten was asymptomatic at the time of the call. The reporter was advised that the product is not intended for use on cats. Onset of toxicity signs may occur within minutes to 12 hours of product exposure. The signs of toxicity were discussed. Generally, it is recommended that the pet is bathed in a non-insecticidal shampoo to remove the product. A recommendation was made to try and bathe the cat using a washcloth and soap if a traditional bath cannot be given. If any signs of toxicity develop, the kitten needs to be seen by a veterinarian for symptomatic and supportive care. Symptomatic cats should be monitored for 48-72 hours as signs can re-develop in under-treated animals. On follow up on 08/31/2009, the reporter stated that she washed the cat with a cloth. The cat did have some hair loss, but no other signs were noted. No further information was obtained.
