Grower had his own single axle, pull-behind nurse tank filled at retail location. Product was being transported to his farm. After going over railroad tracks product began leaking from his tank and the tank literally fell apart.
Environmental Services was called by (name) at 7:15pm, requesting help with a spill of Vapam approximately 250gals, Environmental Services arrived on sight at about 8:30pm, when we arrived police had already shut down the road and the fire department was on-site. Environmental Services stayed back from the scene awaiting the Material Safety Data Sheets, the sheets arrived at approximately 8:45pm, once the sheets were looked over all response personnel put on appropriate PPE ( full face respirator w/organic vapor cartridges, chemical resistant tyveks, rubber gloves, rubber boots, all seams were also taped as an extra measure of safety. Once we were able to approach the spill it came apparent that the plastic tank that contained the vapam had shattered when it was being towed over the railway tracks, from the tracks the Vapam spread out across two lanes of the paved road and was approximately 400' long, it was spilled on a bridge but the drains to the water underneath were dyked off by the driver of the vehicle that had the spill, Environmental Services personnel were able to cover puddles of vapam with clay absorbent and shovel into drums, there was a white film that was left on the road, (name) of Environmental Services contacted the manufacturer of the product to discuss how Environmental Services could remove this film off the road, after a lengthy conversation it was decided that all that was left was used product, and it was decided to let the rain wash the rest away. Environmental Services ended up with 5 drums of vapam and absorball.
