1-17067184: A reporter called on 12/09/2008 to report the exposure of an unknown number of people to an insecticide containing the active ingredient Permethrin. According to the reporter, the product was applied sometime during the past year. The reporter stated that several people had died and she was concerned about the amount of carbon dioxide that may be emitted following product application. The reporter was advised that the product is intended for indoor use and is not toxic when used according to label directions. The reporter was still concerned so a follow up call was placed to her on 12/10/2008. On 12/10/2008, the reporter stated that a pest control operator (PCO) comes into the housing facility where she lives and sprays for bedbugs on a periodic basis. The PCO gave the reporter Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for the company product and a non-company product. She is unsure which product had been applied in her apartment. The reporter had done some research prior to the follow up call and was more comfortable had the company product been used in her residence. The reporter's primary concern at the time of the initial report was regarding any hazardous decomposition products following the product being sprayed on or near her heater. At the time of the follow up call, the reporter was no longer concerned about this. The reporter's concern at the time of the follow up call was for the product label and information sheets to have the most current information for PCOs to deal with bedbug infestations. The reporter denied having any health issues and did not mention concerns for anyone else. No further information was obtained.
Mort
It is unknown what product (company versus non-company product) was used in the reporter's residence. The company product is not expected to cause adverse effects when used according to label directions. The reporter did not provide details regarding the people who had supposedly died-symptoms, exposure to product, etc. Deaths have not been confirmed nor has the cause of the alleged deaths. Ultimate mineralization of permethrin would result in creation of CO2 but quantity generated from an application in a household to control bedbugs would be infinitesimally small.
