1-17038807: A reporter (patient's physician) called to report the exposure of a patient to an insecticide containing the active ingredients Pyrethrins, Piperonyl Butoxide, and Amorphous Silica Dioxide. According to the reporter, the patient was working as a pest control operator (PCO) on 07/13/2005 when the product blew back into his face and was inhaled. The patient immediately developed nausea, vomiting, and shortness of breath. The patient was not wearing a mask at the time of product use. The patient was seen at an emergency room for evaluation of pulmonary problems within hours of product exposure on 07/13/2005. The patient was diagnosed with asthma within one week of product exposure. According to the reporter, the patient did not have any pre-existing respiratory issues prior to product exposure. The reporter stated that the patient's asthma has persisted. He also has lung scarring and has gained weight due to deconditioning. The patient has been under treatment since product exposure with various inhalant and nebulizer treatments and prednisone, in addition to a previous course of Azithromycin. The reporter had noted that the patient's exposure had never been reported, so he called to do so. The reporter was advised that the active ingredients in the product are not expected to cause the signs described after a single, acute exposure. The reporter was also advised that there is a theoretical risk of silicosis developing after chronic exposure to silica dust. The reporter was advised that the incident would be documented. No further information was obtained.
