The reporter applied a feline product to her 7 week old puppy on 7/15/08. The product is designed to be used on pets at least 12 weeks of age. In addition, the product is designed to be used on cats and kittens, not dogs and puppies.

1-16401459: The reporter called on 7/15/08 to report the application of a feline topical flea and tick product containing the active ingredient Tetrachlorvinphos to her 7 week old puppy. According to the reporter, she had applied the product about 2 hours prior to the call. The puppy had licked the product and then had begun to ¿¿¿act funny¿¿¿, had gotten very quiet, and then had had a seizure. By the time of the call the puppy was acting confused and scared, had developed excessive salivation, and had begun to act lethargic. Prior to the call the reporter had bathed the puppy with dish soap and had called a veterinarian, who had recommended the reporter call the registrant. The reporter wondered if there was anything else she needed to do. A recommendation was made to bathe the puppy again, to follow-up with a veterinarian if the seizures continued, and to consult with a veterinarian before using any other flea and tick products. The reporter called again on 7/16. The toxic profile of the product and antidotes were discussed. A follow-up call was placed on 7/22. When contact with the reporter was re-established on 7/24, the reporter stated she had taken the puppy to her veterinarian on 7/15. According to the reporter, her veterinarian had determined the puppy¿¿¿s heart rate and respiratory rate were normal, and had indicated that the puppy would be fine. After the reporter had returned home, the puppy had continued to experience seizures. Per the reporter, she had called the veterinarian numerous times on 7/15 and had always been reassured that the puppy just needed to rest and relax. The reporter stated she opted to take the puppy to a different veterinarian on 7/16. According to the reporter, on physical examination that day the puppy¿¿¿s temperature had been 93.9F. He had received IV fluids, and multiple injections including several Atropine injections. The puppy had passed away the evening of 7/16. Note: The product is designed to be used on pets at least 12 weeks of age. In addition, the product is designed to be used on cats and kittens, not dogs and puppies.
