1-16365821: The reporter called on 7/7/08 to report the application of a topical flea and tick product containing the active ingredient Permethrin to her 2.5 year old male show dog 2 days previously. According to the reporter, she had initially applied a non-specific flea collar but when "it was not working" she had removed it. Two days after removal she had applied the Control Pet Care System product. The reporter stated that by 7/6, the dog had developed dermal irritation, redness, and blisters at the application site. She had contacted her veterinarian, and had given the dog a bath with dish soap as advised. She had also shaved affected areas (neck, chest, right side). By the time of the call on 7/7, some of the skin in the affected areas looked ¿¿¿green¿¿¿ and purulent material could be seen in the blisters. The reporter stated she had a veterinary appointment for later in the day. The safety profile of the product was discussed, including the fact that the symptoms as described would not be typical of product use. The possibility of the product causing paraesthesia followed by subsequent self-traumatic dermatitis was discussed. A follow-up call revealed the dog has been diagnosed with severe hot spots on his neck, shoulder and throat by the veterinarian (described as ¿¿¿burns¿¿¿ by the reporter). The veterinarian had prescribed antibiotics, a course of steroids, and pain medications. The reporter had also been instructed to clean the affected areas with water and dilute hydrogen peroxide. Per the reporter, the dog¿¿¿s appetite had decreased; he had lost weight (13-16 lbs.) and had been somewhat lethargic. No additional information is available.
