Reporter bathed cat in flea and tick shampoo on or around 7/17/08 after removing a flea collar. Two days after bathing the cat, the reporter applied the flea and tick drop product. None of these products are labelled for use on geriatric pets. Additionally, the registrant recommends a waiting period of approximately 5 days between application of a flea and tick shampoo and application of flea and tick drops.

1-16453213: The reported called on 7/28/2008, to report exposure of his mother¿s 15year old, 5lb, female cat to a flea and tick product containing the active ingredients Etofenprox and Methoprene. According to the reporter, he bathed the cat in a flea and tick shampoo after having removed an unspecified flea collar that the cat had been wearing. He had called an un-specified company, and had been told he should wait two days after bathing the cat to apply the flea and tick drops. Two days after bathing the cat, the reporter applied the topical flea and tick drops to the cat. Two days following application of the drops, the cat became lethargic. Symptoms of lethargy persisted until the cat was found dead. The cat was never presented for veterinary care. The reporter was advised that given the history and onset of symptoms, it was unlikely that the symptoms were related to the flea and tick drops alone. Additionally, it was discussed with the reporter that the product is not labeled for use on geriatric animals as sensitivity issues can develop. Further it was discussed that it is never recommended to use multiple flea and tick products on an animal at the same time as sensitivity issues can occur. A recommendation was made to discuss the situation with a Veterinarian and consider necropsy to assist in determining the exact cause of death.
