On 08-Aug-2022, a 0.5 year old, approximately 20 pound, non-pregnant non-lactating, female, Labrador Retriever /German Shepherd dog, in unknown condition, with concomitant medical condition of fleas, was administered 1 dose of Hartz UltraGuard Rid Flea and Tick Shampoo with Oatmeal for Dogs (Phenothrin (Sumithrin)) via the topical route by the animal owner. Death
Assessment: This product contains a pyrethroid insecticide in low-concentration giving it a very wide margin of safety in dogs. Even if the product was ingested directly during bathing only minor and transient signs of GI upset would be expected. Development of anorexia, diarrhea, urinary incontinence, and renal failure progressing to death does not fit the toxicological profile of the product. Other causes including infectious disease, dietary indiscretion, and toxin exposure (grapes/raisins, antifreeze, NSAIDs like ibuprofen, etc.) should all be considered. Without a necropsy, the cause of death remains unknown and the relationship to product use is inconclusive. The information contained in this report is based on self-reported statements provided to the registrant during telephone interview(s). These self-reported descriptions of an incident have not been independently verified to be factually correct or complete descriptions of the incident. For that reason, information contained in this report does not and cannot form the basis for a determination of whether the reported clinical effects are causally related to exposure to the product identified in the telephone interviews.
