(eg. description of the frequency and severity of the symptoms
On November 3, 2018, the cat became symptomatic. The owner then removed the collar, bathed the cat, and applied olive oil to the irritation site. The next morning the cat passed away. On November 16, 2018, the owner contacted the Animal Product Safety Service (APSS) whose veterinarian stated that tetrachlorvinphos is an organophosphate (OP) with a very wide margin of safety and that it is used in flea collars for cats. The APSS veterinarian further stated that death is not expected with labeled use, but any animal can have an adverse reaction. Finally, the APSS veterinarian stated that sudden death in a young cat would be suspect for an underlying heart condition and possibly the stressful event may have increased the risk for death. The APSS assistant recommended the owner refer to the manufacturer (for reimbursement) and to call back with questions.
Death
The APSS veterinarian stated that the substance was considered to have a doubtful likelihood of causing the clinical situation. A necropsy was not available as the cat had already been buried.
