(eg. description of the frequency and severity of the symptoms
On March 6, 2017 the owner applied the product to their dog and saw the cat lick it from the dog's coat once. Almost immediately the cat vomited once. The cat developed no other symptoms. Shortly after, the owner contacted the Animal Product Safety Service (APSS). The APSS veterinarian stated that cats do not tolerate permethrin and that there are some individual variations in sensitivity. The APSS veterinarian further stated that signs can develop from almost immediately up to 72 hours post-exposure and that some cats are sensitive enough that casual contact with a treated dog can cause clinical signs. The APSS technician recommended that the owner monitor at home, manage vomiting, monitor for gastrointestinal (GI) signs, and to monitor for central nervous system signs. The APSS technician also recommended that the owner take the cat to a veterinarian if anything more than mild GI upset develops and have the veterinarian call for more information.
Minor
The APSS veterinarian stated that the substance was considered to have a medium likelihood of causing the clinical situation. A follow up was not performed, because additional information was not expected. Therefore, the outcome of this case is unknown.
