(eg. description of the frequency and severity of the symptoms
On November 15, 2015 the cat developed symptoms. On November 16, 2015 the owner contacted the Animal Product Safety Service (APSS). The APSS veterinarian stated cats do not tolerate permethrin and have individual variations in sensitivity. The APSS veterinarian also stated signs range from mild dermal hypersensitivity to seizures and signs can develop from almost immediately up to 72 hours post-exposure. The APSS veterinarian also stated some cats are sensitive enough that casual contact with a treated dog can cause clinical signs. The APSS technician recommended the owner take the cat to the veterinarian and have the veterinarian call for information.
Moderate
On November 16, 2015 the emergency veterinarian called the APSS to discuss the case. The emergency veterinarian stated the cat's tremors were moderate. The APSS veterinarian recommended a chemistry profile, complete blood count, symptomatic and supportive care, fluid diuresis, methocarbamol (55-220 milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg) intravenously (IV), slow to effect), diazepam, bathing the cat (liquid dish washing detergent (LDWD), follicular flushing shampoo), propofol (if refractory to methocarbamol), monitoring the cat at the veterinary facility for central nervous system (CNS) signs, and calling back with questions. Off label dog product was inappropriately used on the cat.
