1-16434716: The reporter called on 7/23/08 to report the exposure of her 4 month old female kitten to a topical flea and tick product containing the active ingredient Tetrachlorvinphos. According to the reporter, she had applied the collar as per package directions. However, sometime after application the collar had slipped over the lower jaw of the kitten and had become stuck underneath the kitten¿¿¿s tongue. By the time the reporter had found the kitten, she had vomited and was ¿¿¿barely breathing¿¿¿. Per the reporter, the collar was designed with a safety release mechanism that had not engaged and she had ended up cutting the collar off. Sometime after removal of the collar, the kitten had begun shivering. By the time of the call, the reporter had removed the collar and had bathed the kitten in a medicated flea shampoo. The kitten had become more lethargic after the bath. The safety profile of the product was discussed in terms of a possible ingestion. A recommendation was made to bathe the kitten in hand dishwashing soap and to seek veterinary care if the kitten¿¿¿s symptoms continued. The reporter called back about 1 hour later to reveal the kitten was still lethargic but the shivering had resolved. No additional information is available.
